Letters of recommendation and your packet
You rarely control the letter’s sentences, but you can shape the materials referees receive so their anecdotes match your claim.
Applicants often treat recommendation letters as a separate track. Panels read them against your statement. When the letter praises teaching and your essay emphasises laboratory leadership, the mismatch creates doubt even if both are true.
Give each referee a one-page brief: the programme name, the two claims you most need supported, and two concrete episodes they witnessed. Ask them to choose one episode rather than listing every strength. Specificity travels further than breadth.
Do not draft the letter yourself unless the referee explicitly requests a starting text, and even then label it clearly as a draft. Many panels can sense a letter written in the applicant’s voice.
In an audit we sometimes suggest adjusting statement emphasis so it aligns with letters already promised. That is quieter work than asking a senior colleague to rewrite under deadline.
